Pushing boundaries.
We all do it. Some to a greater degree than others. Some who never seem to outgrow their rebellious teen years (with dubious results). And some that put it to good use and up-level the game for everyone (with excellent results).
It’s the latter group that is definitely to the benefit of the eco-friendly revolution. Not content with the current trajectory of humankind, these visionaries are actively transforming the way textiles are manufactured, making for a more sustainable future.
A few notable breakthroughs that are making inroads in human clothing that could easily transfer over to pet clothing:
Spinnova® Fiber
Why it's good for pets: Soft, breathable, hypoallergenic, and highly durable—great for active pets.
Sourcing: Directly from Spinnova, based in Finland. They partner with brands like Adidas, The North Face and H&M.
Why it’s unique: Patented technology (the only in the world) that makes textile fiber from wood pulp or waste without harsh chemicals or dissolving.
Top uses: Anything cotton is used for – would be perfect for dog t-shirts, hoodies and jackets.
Agraloop™ BioFibre
Why it's good: Natural feel, durable, and breathable—ideal for dog clothing that's worn outdoors.
Sourcing: From Circular Systems (with mills around the world).
Why it’s unique: Scalable circular technology (refines leftover crop waste into textile-grade fiber, later biodegradable) that directly supports all 17 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
Top uses: Ideal for dog t-shirts, hoodies, and fleece jackets.
Bananatex®
Why it's good: Water-resistant, strong, and biodegradable. Should be excellent for harnesses or dog jackets.
Sourcing: From QWSTION, Switzerland-based.
Why it’s unique: Per their website, they are the world’s first durable, biodegradable and plastic-free fabric made purely from regeneratively grown Abacá banana plants.
Top uses: A great vegan alternative to synthetic materials, perhaps a good option for collars & leashes, boots & coats and a tote to carry all pup’s toys in.
Circulose®
Why it's good: Soft, biodegradable, and comes from post-consumer clothing waste.
Sourcing: From the CIRCULOSE® Supplier Network, global.
Why it’s unique: It recycles cotton strictly from discarded textiles (worn out clothes and production scraps), from which new clothes can be made, making fashion circular.
Top uses: With companies like Levi’s, Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger using it, perhaps there could be a denim pup coat, sweatshirt or hoodie in the future?

So, putting the work of these visionaries into action … a couple of good ideas from my ChatGPT friend for The Earth Pup drawing board:

The Everyday Eco Hoodie
Use: Light warmth for walks, lounging, layering.
Fabric: Spinnova® x Organic Cotton blend (soft, breathable, low-impact)
Colors: Sandstone, Forest Moss, Charcoal
Features: Adjustable belly strap, kangaroo-style pocket for waste bags or treats.
Sizes: XS – XL (toy to Great Dane)

The Rain Rover Trench
Use: Water-repellent jacket for wet weather.
Fabric: Bananatex® outer shell + Circulose® lining
Colors: Banana Leaf Green, Graphite Grey, Black
Features: Quick-dry, stylish turn-up collar, extra-long sleeves for better coverage.
Bonus: Plastic-free snaps made from compressed coconut shell.
More research to do, and time will tell what the time to market is, but designing is definitely a fun part of this journey!
